This study examines the impact of forest management systems on stand structure and understory diversity in the temperate mixed forests of Arasbaran, Iran. Comparing traditional coppice forests with modern Coppice-with-Standards (CWS) systems, we analyzed species composition, quantitative structural variables (shoot height, total height, DBH, basal area), and multiple diversity indices (Simpson, Shannon-Wiener, Margalef, Menhinik, Pielou, Hill). Results indicate a significant shift in species composition and dominance between systems, with Quercus macranthera dominant in coppice stands and Carpinus orientalis in CWS stands. Quantitative structural variables were significantly higher in CWS stands (p < 0.01). Diversity analysis revealed higher species richness and evenness in coppice systems (e.g., Pielou index of 1.42 vs. 1.01), suggesting that while CWS management enhances forest structure and timber potential, traditional coppice may support greater understory diversity. The findings underscore a trade-off between structural development and biodiversity conservation, providing critical insights for designing sustainable forest management strategies in similar ecosystems globally.
